EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Jauz discusses performing at SW4 festival, his "This Is off the Deep End" compi

Jauz has made a name for himself as one of the most exciting DJs to emerge from the EDM scene. With his compositions spanning from EDM, house, trap, future bass and dubstep, his music is ever evolving as his explores new genres. Ahead of his performance at South West Four (SW4) on 24 August, we at CelebMix got to chat to Jauz himself about his new compilation release, “This Is off the Deep End”, his friendship with Skrillex, and how it feels to perform live.

How does it feel to be performing at SW4 2019?

“It’s my first time doing the smaller stage [the Together x Bite This! stage], I’ve previously played the main stage at the festival twice. I’m super excited, because I’ve never really got to see much of the festival before!”

You’ve previously worked with Skrillex, and collaborated with him on the 2015 single “Squad Out!”. How did it feel to work with such a renowned dubstep artist?

“I was really starstruck to meet him! I got to go over to Skrillex’s house to work on music with him, and it was the craziest thing, as I’ve grown up listening to and feeling inspired by his music. But now we’re friends, it’s so crazy that I’m now friends with one of my favourite DJ’s!”

What’s inspired your musical output? Who are some of your musical inspirations?

“I was actually really into rock music originally, and I wanted to be in a band. But then I soon got into dance music, and in particular, music from the UK, such as UK garage, dubstep, and even grime! I’m really into grime artists such as Stormzy and Skepta, I remember hearing a dubstep Skepta record back in 2008 [“Intensive Snare”] and it’s crazy to see how far he’s come since then!”

You recently released a new compilation called “This is off the Deep End”, which sees you and other artists experiment with deep house, among other genres you’re known for such as EDM and future bass. What inspired the compilation, and how did you decide which tracks to feature on it?

“The idea behind it was to kind of push the deeper side of my brand, and what I’m known for. I wanted to experiment with more deeper, UK-esque music, which I know the fans will still love. It’s definitely a lot more on the deep house side and more high energy than before. I also wanted to be able to support cool new artists, which is why I’ve included so many up and coming ones on the compilation!”

What’s your favourite track to perform live?

“Probably whatever is new. My latest single, “Thunder”, has been crushing into my sets as of late!”

What is your favourite part about touring and performing live?

“It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. But I really enjoy seeing all of the different places and eating so much different food! I’m a big foodie!”

Do you get nervous before performing in front of big crowds of people?

“Sometimes, but not today, I’ve been relaxed today and had a lot of fun, if I am nervous I find myself trying too hard to put on a great performance!”

Who out of all of the South West Four (SW4) acts are you looking forward to seeing the most?

“I really wanted to see Tchami & Malaa’s set, but unfortunately they were performing at the same time as me! Hopefully I’ll be able to catch them sometime soon. I did get to see Martin Garrix’s set in Ibiza, and he was great, I’d been wanting to see him for a while, so hopefully I’ll be able to see him when he performs later!”

Is there any artist you would love to perform live with?

“Metallica! They are my number one favourite band! I think we could do something great together on stage.”

And is there any artist you would like to collaborate on in a track in future?

“I’ve been saying Calvin Harris for years now, so probably Stormzy or Skepta. I feel like their output would work with my sound!”

You also have your own record label, called Bite This, which is home to many other EDM artists and DJs. Is there any particular artists you would like to sign to the label in future?

“I don’t know really. The main goal is to find new artists, and give them a platform they wouldn’t find anywhere else, and to discover new talent.”

What are some of your favourite songs at the moment?

“There’s this remix of the Space Jam theme song by Quad City DJs I really like right now, it’s so sick!”

Have you got anymore shows lined up for the rest of this year?

“This is my last UK show, but I have a couple more festivals lined up for the rest of this year, then hopefully I’ll be able to record as much new music as I can.”

Will you be performing at South West Four (SW4) again?

“Of course! This is my third year here, and I’ll keep performing here until I’m an old man!”

Finally, do you have anything you would like to say to your fans?

“Thanks for supporting me and letting me do my thing for five years, it’s been crazy! I have more music coming!”

We would also like to thank Jauz for taking the time out to talk to us!
