New Portals release dreamy video for Groove Boy

New Portals, the dreamy alt-pop duo from Belfast just released their equally dreamy music video for their new single “Groove Boy” last week. They were also selected as “The Guardian’s New Band of the Week” on Friday on the same week.

The Track and Music Video

The couple’s R&B infused take on electro-pop was paired with a very dreamy visual that has moments that fits perfectly with an 80’s or 90’s film. The rhythm of the song maybe electro-pop with a dash of “happy” feel to it but the lyrics and music video themselves have a melancholy vibe to them: “you took my love and you gave it away“.

The music video starts with Ruth Aicken looking beautiful as always but this time with a sense of ethereality due to the lighting, she is then joined by her husband, Mike Aicken.

The video then proceeds and maintains its very dreamy and vintage vibe. The black and white clips that are show throughout the video makes you feel like you’re in the middle of a film, either “The Great Gatsby“, “Inception” or an old 80’s/90’s film.

The lyrics of the song is like someone is torn on whether or not love this man or not. They are torn because sometimes this man is everything they ever wish for but sometimes they’re not.

“Groove Boy” is that type of song with a music video that could be played anywhere: at home during a Sunday or in a club during a Friday. It can be both relaxing and something that you can dance to.

With the quality and beauty of the visuals of their music videos so far, we might just ask Ruth and Mike to create music videos for each and everyone of their beautiful songs.

All in all, New Portals have, once again, delivered a great record paired with an equally good music video. We may or may not have this on replay… but that’s a secret we’ll never tell.
