Robert Lewandowski explains tears as first-ever World Cup goal sparks emotional celebration after Po

It had been a long time coming for him, but Robert Lewandowski has finally scored a goal at the World Cup.

Having failed to do so in 2018, the striker got himself off the mark on the world stage in Qatar as Poland secured a vital 2-0 win against Saudi Arabia, and he was clearly moved.

Lewandowski, who signed for Barcelona in the summer after eight seasons at Bayern Munich, was on hand to net his country's second of the game.

Midfielder Abdulellah Al Malki received the ball on the edge of his own area, but couldn't sense the oncoming forward.

Lewandowski dispossessed the Saudi Arabian and was soon through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat.

He was able to prove his quality once again as he calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net, with the goal being his 77th in 136 appearances for Poland.

The emotion was clear to see from the 34-year-old and his eyes were clearly welling up with tears.

Lewandowski said: โ€œThe older I get, the more emotional I get. I am aware that when it comes to the World Cup this could be my last. I wanted to say that I have played and scored at World Cups.

โ€œWhen I scored, everything that I had inside - the dreams, the importance of the goal, the way I scored it - all the dreams from my early childhood were fulfilled.โ€

talkSPORT's Dean Ashton was quick to praise the reliant forward after the goal: "It's an absolute shocker of a mistake. But there's the poacher. There's one of the best goal scorers in the world.

"When he gets these guilt-edged chances, he doesn't miss.

"You can just see how emotional he is. Tears running down his face."

Ashton added: "You could tell with his reaction. Very emotional, head in the turf, tears in his eyes.

"For someone who has been such an amazing goalscorer, to not have a World Cup goal on his CV would've been such a shame."

The win has put Poland at the top of Group C, with Saudi Arabia unable to repeat their efforts against Argentina earlier in the week.
